Curriculum

Georgia Performance Standards: (GPS) This is our core academic curriculum created by the State Department of Education.  You may go to their website to see the complete list of first grade standards.

Everyday Math:  This math program is based on the University of Chicago mathematics initiative.  It is a spiraling mathematics program in grades 1-5 at Jackson.  Children revisit and build upon skills and concepts learned from kindergarten and throughout the year in first grade.  It includes hands-on activities for counting, numeration, measurement, geometry patterns, sorting, data calculation, and beginning addition and subtraction.

Reading/Language Arts/SMART Phonics/Spelling:  These four areas are all taught together and are building blocks for one another.  Our new SMART phonics program is a systemic multi-sensory approach to teaching reading and spelling.  There are various hands-on activities and games that we use to teach letter sounds, decoding, and spelling to help students become better readers.  Students are assessed to produce appropriate reading levels for individualized reading instruction.  All of these programs work together to educate all levels of learners.

Accelerated Reader (AR):  Accelerated Reader is a supplemental reading program that we utilize at Jackson.  AR is a mandatory part of 1st grade.  We have a 1st grade AR WALL OF FAME posted at Jackson.  Each student will have an individualized goal created by their teacher.  As students earn points, they will be recognized in point categories on our AR WALL OF FAME!  We use AR as a motivator to get kids excited about reading!!!  To help your child become a better reader, listen to him or her read each night and ask lots of comprehension questions.

Science:  This is a new program that has been adopted by Atlanta Public Schools to allow for more inquiry and discovery through hands on experiences.

Social Studies/International Baccalaureate (IB):  At Jackson, we have six units of inquiry, which revolve mostly around our Science & Social Studies GPS.  IB helps our students to make connections between themselves and the world around them, while becoming inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people.

EIP (Early Intervention Program):  The EIP program at Jackson is designed to provide EXTRA reading, writing and math support in the areas of need for individual students or groups of students with the same need.

AssessmentS

Report Cards:  Report cards go home October 16th, January 12th, March 19th, and June 4th. The 1st grade report card will grade students on the numerical grading scale…A (90 and above), B (80-89), C (70-79), F (below 70).  This grading scale was created by APS.  Students will be graded on individual tests, quizzes, reports, class work, and assignments designated by the individual classroom teacher.  Teachers will also give a grade for conduct – E (excellent), S(satisfactory), N(needs improvement), or U (unacceptable).

STAR test:  The STAR test is a reading assessment we use at Jackson to determine reading levels in a grade equivalency format.
