We learned all about how to be a good friend this week! We read lots of books about friends and discussed how friends treat each other. One of our favorite books was Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. The story is about a little mouse named Chrysanthemum who thinks her name is absolutely perfect...until her first day of school! After the other children tease her about her name, Chrysanthemum starts to dislike her name and wish for a new one. After reading the story I had each child crinkle a paper heart I had cut out. We talked about how each crinkle represented something mean being said to someone. When we were all finished, I tried to straighten out the heart, but it still looked wrinkled. It reminded all of us that saying mean things can stick with a person. Think before you speak!
We also listed some things that good friends do and started working on our friendship books. We ALL want to be a good friend. :)
These are a work in progress. The children are excited to finish them next week.
The children worked hard to create their schedule caterpillars. It shows what days we have our different specials. Our schedule has changed a little since the first day of school. Not only has media center moved from Friday to Monday, but our recess is now 10:00-10:30 (the children needed an earlier break) and our lunch is 11:35-12:05.
